Hickling Broad Walk and later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost
Sunday 17 February 2019
2:30pm to 5:00pm
Meeting Point: We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 2.30pm. The grid reference is TG 428 222.
Note: Please bring your NWT membership card to show at the Visitor Centre. Entry price for non members is £4.50 with Gift Aid or £4.00 standard entry. The NWT Visitor Centre will be open and has a small café, picnic tables and toilets. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple of hours, which can be cold. As the raptors can be distant a telescope is useful if you have one.
Distance: 3 miles
We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor and crane roost. This is an afternoon trip. The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. It might be cold but it is also rewarding with the possibility of seeing Common Cranes, Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlin, Buzzards, Short-eared and Barn Owls coming in to roost.
Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club’s carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing
