BTO’s ‘Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey’.

Oct 5, 2026 Carol Thornton

News about NEWS!

The upcoming winter of 2026/27 sees the next season of ‘NEWS’, which is the BTO’s ‘Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey’. This beach-based survey aims to monitor non-breeding waterbirds occurring on less well covered stretches of coast that are not counted for the regular monthly Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) counts.

Previous NEWS surveys have shown that these areas can be well used by waders such as Turnstone, Purple Sandpiper and Sanderling. The results provide additional data that might otherwise be missed by WeBS counts, feeding into national and international population estimates.

The BTO are looking for volunteers to undertake a single visit around low tide (checking the tides is essential!) in December or January. Surveyors cover a stretch of circa 2km and record waterbirds (waders, wildfowl, divers, grebes, cormorants, shags, herons and egrets) present on the intertidal zone, on the sea and (where possible) using the land up to 100m from the high tide mark. There are also some simple habitat measures to record at the same time. Records of other species such as seabirds (gulls) and raptors and even mammals are encouraged to get a complete picture, but these are not essential.

At the time of writing, there are a few priority stretches of coast in our club area that need a volunteer. The sectors north-west and south-east of Mundesley are vacant, as is a stretch east of Weybourne.

It would be great if we could get all the club area coast covered for the BTO, the link below includes a map showing the stretches in our club area when you zoom in.

Remember zero or close to zero counts are valuable data, so don’t give it a miss because you don’t think there will be any birds to record. A peaceful and exhilarating winter beach walk is always a good thing, let us know how you get on.
