Kelling Heath

Image of Kelling Heath birding site

The car park is off Holgate Hill on the north side about a quarter of a mile east of Holt Garden Centre. A mile inland, the north side is a mixture of heath, pine and birch and being elevated offers great views towards the sea at Kelling and Weybourne. The area to the west of the car park is outside the clubs area but anything to the north and east is.The south side is similar but is bisected by the North Norfolk Railway and offers views of the Cromer Ridge. Most of the south side falls within the club area. A SSSI, it is noted as the first recorded breeding site for Dartford Warbler in Norfolk but over the years has boasted many interesting passage migrants including Hoopoe, Wryneck and Ring Ouzel. Wintering raptors have included Hen Harrier, Rough-legged Buzzard and the Great Grey Shrike which nearly wiped out the Dartford population. Typical birds include Linnet, Siskin, Stonechat, Yellowhammer, finches, crossbill and larks. Turtle Dove can still be found in the summer along with a good range of warblers. It has a very diverse range of flora and fauna, which includes good Adder and Silver Studded Blue populations.
